Job description

As CEO you will report directly to the Commissioner, His Excellency Colin Martin-Reynolds CMG (who is also Governor of the Falkland Islands) to ensure strong leadership, and effective governance and operations of this UK Overseas Territory.

As the most senior official within the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, you will lead both its strategic development and operational activity, securing continued success in delivering world-leading evidence-based sustainable management.

This role carries significant responsibility and its six core elements can be described as follows:

  • Strategic Leadership – developing the Government’s strategy for environmental management, fisheries, tourism, heritage and science; translating the strategy into a workable operational plan with the team and delivering on the plan.
  • People Leadership – leading and developing a team of three Directors who in turn line manage small teams of specialist in the Falkland Islands, in South Georgia and in the UK, with responsibility for a total workforce of c. 100 people including staff, contractors, third party experts, mariners, scientists and specialists.
  • Operational Leadership – ensuring strong financial stewardship of an £8m budget annually, assets of c. £40m, sound contracts, and oversight of a substantial multi-jurisdictional logistics operation across fisheries and tourism.
  • Stakeholder Engagement – representing the Government in international fora, liaising with UK Government departments, NGOs, scientific institutions, and commercial operators.
  • Governance & Compliance – ensuring legal and regulatory compliance, including oversight of permitting, enforcement, and international treaty obligations.
  • Crisis & Risk Management – anticipating emerging risks, including maritime incidents, biosecurity threats, and geopolitical developments; and leading operational response to major incidents.
  • Environmental Stewardship – championing conservation, biosecurity, and climate resilience in one of the world’s most protected ecosystems.
